Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard have been going strong for 10 years — which, considering the fact that they’re both celebrities, is basically more like 30 years. Their union is a cultural touchstone and a source of inspiration for those of us who just want a weird, loving partnership.
E! News recently interviewed Bell at the premiere for A Bad Moms Christmas to gauge how these two manage to keep their marriage exciting and fulfilling.
“Well, the funny keeps it spicy,” Bell said, referring to the couple’s shared sense of humor.
She was quick to add that “spicy” isn’t necessarily achievable every single day of marriage, but that the small niceties really win her over.
“Just being aware of the other person’s needs is hot. I mean, look, we’re 10 years into marriage, it’s not like anybody’s closing the door after work and ripping each other’s clothes off … (The hot sex) does happen, but it sort of comes out of, like, he’ll make the coffee or, like, wear a Christmas sweater to the Bad Moms premiere — which, I was like, ‘Are you trying to make me horny? Come on.'”
Clearly an astute sweater choice, Dax.
Bell’s fellow A Bad Mom Christmas star Mile Kunis was also asked how she keeps things “hot” with husband Ashton Kutcher (I’m noticing a theme, here). Her response was a bit more succinct, but still helpful: “Communication. Just, communication is key.”
So, there you have it, folks: the key to a “spicy” marriage is to be funny, make coffee, and communicate your feelings.
Oh — and wear tacky Christmas sweaters.
