Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland has rapidly become a social media darling, thanks in part to her adorable relationship with Bachelor in Paradise alum Wells Adams, and her penchant for not taking any crap from online haters.
Recently, Hyland shared a cute selfie of herself, Adams, and his bloodhound, Carl, all spooning in bed together — and, because this is the internet, where people have zero filters and no ability to mind their own business, there were some negative responses.
The photo in question was pretty innocent. Sure, it doesn’t look like Sarah or Wells are wearing much clothing beneath those sheets, but who cares? Let them live their damn lives!
The “scandalous” photo prompted one fan to send Sarah a direct message, shaming her for daring to share details of her “sexual life” with the public.
Hyland shared a snapshot of the message to Twitter.
And, because she’s a self-possessed woman who doesn’t put up with any slut-shaming, she publicly responded to the hater’s accusations.
In a series of four screenshots, Sarah explained why she shared the photo in the first place:
Not putting her on blast. She just brought to my attention that that picture I posted might have been inappropriate since we’re in bed. So I just have to say I’m so sorry … FOR POSTING AN ADORABLE PICTURE BECAUSE CARL WAS ACTING LIKE THE NUGGETIEST SNUGGLE BUG! Couldn’t let that moment pass without getting a picture … The only things I share about my (life) with you all is through Instagram and Twitter. I do want my privacy. Especially in relationships. I’ve made the mistake in the past on being way too open and talking way too much about them. This time is different. It’s special. And I will share what I (deem) ‘appropriate’ on social media because I still want you all to be updated. Because you guys are the greatest fans in the world. I even hate saying fans…because you’re people. You’re people who have had chronic illnesses, eating disorders, (troubled) family situations that Modern Family helps you get through. People who share their stories with me and I love you all for that. So thank you for always (being) so wonderful.
She also added that it seemed like a strange double-standard to shame her for baring her shoulders when some Instagram celebrities are celebrated for showing considerably more skin:
ONE MORE THING! I just realized I’m being criticized for being naked… which you don’t even know if I am! You can barely see any skin but it’s ok for Instagram models to roll around in the sand ACTUALLY naked? (I mean I’d post that too if I looked like that.) My point is don’t be hypocrites. Either be conservative on all fronts or FREE THE NIPPLE.
Ultimately, Hyland says that she’s not trying to sink to her critics’ level — but that she can’t resist the opportunity to shut down some negativity.
Good for you, Sarah. Don’t let people shame you for daring to sleep in the same bed as a handsome man and his adorable dog. It’s a good thing that living well is the best revenge — because I’m pretty sure you’ve got that on lock.
