On Monday, the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show took place in Shanghai. And, despite a laudable array of diversity among this year’s models, the company seems to have remained stubborn in its unspoken position to not hire any plus-size models for the runway.
Ashley Graham, plus-size model/goddess/body-positive guru, is finding it more and more difficult to not get annoyed by this notable exclusion.
In response to the VSFS, Graham posted a cheeky photo to Instagram which featured her walking a runway in lingerie, with large, feathery wings Photoshopped behind her. Not surprisingly, this seemed to be a polite “F*ck you” to Victoria’s Secret for not inviting Graham to walk with the notoriously exclusive VS Angels.
Graham’s caption read:
Got my wings! 🦋💐🌈😜 .. my #AdditionElle wings! #thickthighssavelives
In the photo, Graham wears Canadian plus-size brand Addition Elle instead of Victoria’s Secret — which should serve as an important reminder that some lingerie brands are much more inclusive when it comes to supporting diverse representation.
Naturally, some commenters expressed their (noxious) opinions about why “fat” people shouldn’t be represented in lingerie fashion shows. However, there were also many people who were heartened by Graham’s post, and felt hopeful that perhaps one day they would be able to identify with one of the women wearing these fake, oversized angel wings.
Until then, we’ll all just have to settle for how bangin’ Ashley looks in her fake Victoria’s Secret debut.
